Upon starting the Onyx Pro up initially, you will need to enter some basic data about yourself. This data will be used as the foundation for the workouts programmed into the Pro; based on your estimated maximum heart rate, the unit will calculate three target training zones. The lowest of these zones is ideally used for weight loss and basic fitness training, and the highest is for increasing the body's endurance and anaerobic capacity. The unit features a number of training programs already entered, with various goals including recovery, long and medium endurance, and even a full 42.195 kilometer marathon. You are also free to program the individualized training program of your choice. Additionally, the Pro has interval training sessions programmed, which are controlled by your heart rate rather than fixed timings. Finally, the unit is equipped with a free training function, in which you simply exercise in the manner of your choosing, without any pre-programmed phases.

When taking part in any training program, it can be an extremely helpful motivational tool to be able to look back at how you have performed in the past. The Onyx Pro stores a maximum of one year of data from your training sessions, which can be viewed at weekly or monthly intervals, or in terms of the totals that you have compiled since the last time the data was erased.
