An internal GPS receiver means that no extra hardware is necessary to wear or carry when working out, and with world-class GPS power on your wrist, Garmin has spared no expense in including a variety of fun GPS-enabled features to stimulate your workouts and keep your motivation level high. The Forerunner 405CX includes a USB dongle that plugs into your computer, allowing for automatic wireless data transfers to take place whenever you are near your computer. Once you have downloaded your workout data into the free Garmin Training Center software, you can easily generate graphs allowing you to drill down into your workout and analyze your body's performance on a deeper level. Garmin Training Center also has the fun feature of being able to take the data collected by the Forerunner's GPS receiver, and overlay your routes on satellite photos for sharing with your friends. You can even share data wirelessly with other Forerunner 405 or 405CX owners, simply by being within a few meters of them.
Although both the Forerunner 405 and 405CX can monitor your heart rate, only the 405CX comes with the chest strap required to do this. With the 405, it must be purchased separately. Therefore, the 405CX is the more highly recommended package at only a $70 manufacturer-suggested price difference. Additionally, the 405CX is the only Forerunner model that can calculate the number of calories burned during a workout from your heart rate. The other Forerunner models estimate calories burned based on your personal information, and the speed at which you travel. The heart rate monitor allows you to make sure that you are staying within your target heart rate during workouts.

Like the Forerunner 405, the 405CX can be paired with the compatible Foot Pad or Cadence Sensor (sold separately), for runners or cyclists. These add-ons allow the 405CX to continue tracking your speed and distance during indoor workouts, or when heavy tree cover causes you to lose GPS signal.
