Garmin Forerunner 310XT
With its Forerunner line of personal trainers, Garmin has created a product range that integrates its world-famous GPS technology with the heart rate monitoring capabilities of a personal trainer. The Forerunner 310XT, however, brings something completely new to the market in the form of a personal trainer for multi-sport athletes who swim during their workouts.

The Forerunner 310XT comes in two different configurations, with or without a chest strap to monitor heart rate. It is ideally used by an athlete who cycles or runs, and swims, in the same workout. Its internal GPS allows you to track your speed and distance traveled during your workout, and the optional heart rate monitor ensures that you are maintaining your target heart rates, and tracks the number of calories that you are burning. When you change sports during your workout, simply press a button, and you will see a new set of data specifically tailored for that sport.
With an internal GPS, the 310XT allows you to track you speed and distance traveled during your workout. When you get home, the data will automatically be downloaded to your computer for use with the free Garmin Training Center software. The 310XT includes a USB dongle that connects to the computer, and allows you to wirelessly transfer your data any time you are close to it, with no wires or cradles! Once those data has been transferred to the computer, you can easily use it to generate graphs showing your performance during your workout, or overlay your route on satellite images. The 310XT can even send data wirelessly to other Forerunner units, including the 405 and 405CX.

The Forerunner 310XT is also compatible with Garmin's optional Foot Pad and Cadence Sensor accessories, for runners and cyclists respectively. These accessories allow you to continue tracking your speed and distance even during indoor workouts, or times when GPS signal is lost under heavy tree cover.
The unit is not without its limitations, however. The Forerunner 310XT is not designed for athletes who exclusively swim, as the heart rate monitoring and GPS capabilities do not function underwater. When swimming, the 310XT will time your swim, and when you exit the water, the heart rate monitoring and GPS will resume working. Likewise, the 310XT is not an ideal choice for athletes who do not swim, as the Forerunner 405CX has all of the same features at a lower price point.
