Garmin Edge 705
Since 1989, Garmin has been among the world's foremost providers of GPS navigation devices. From satellite navigation, they have since branched and now manufacture GPS-enabled fitness equipment with some of the most exciting features now available. Of these, the Garmin Edge product line is designed specifically for cyclists, and the flagship model, the Edge 705, is simply the most powerful cycling computer on the market.

Using the Edge 705, you can easily design pre-programmed workouts for yourself in a number of different ways. Use the simple workout feature to base your workout on any combination of speed, time, and distance, or the interval workout option to add intervals of more difficult work, and rest. Designing a course from a map, however, is the most fun. It is easily possible to do this, or to use the path that you took in a previous workout, using the free Training Center software provided by Garmin. Once you have set the desired course for your workout, the Edge 705's high resolution display will show a visual representation of yourself as you traveled the course previously, or a "virtual partner" whose speed you can customize using the unit's simple joystick control mechanism.

To take your workout to the next level, the Edge 705 includes a chest strap with a heart rate monitor. When worn, it wirelessly transmits information to the Edge showing whether or not you are maintaining the target heart rates for your workout. Additionally, the Edge 705 is compatible with Garmin's cadence sensor, allowing you to continue recording data about your speeds and distances traveled when your GPS signal is lost under an overpass or heavy tree cover. The Edge 705 can also be used with third-party power meters that use the ANT+ standard to transmit data.
Competing electronic cycle computers generally do not include GPS capability, or require GPS sensors to be purchased separately. When this is taken into account, these competing solutions can often cost more than the Edge 705, and will not include any mapping capabilities. The Edge 705 is both a full-featured navigation device and an equally powerful cycle computer, making it a top buy for any serious cyclist.
