Garmin Edge 305

Many cyclists who are serious about showing consistent improvement are using onboard cycle computers to track their cycling speeds and distances. The problem with many cycle computers, however, is the fact that many are only able to make these calculations with the help of cadence sensors, which can be difficult to set up, often have to be calibrated for a specific bicycle, and are sometimes not entirely accurate. The accuracy can be improved with the addition of a GPS device, but these must often be purchased separately at a cost of $100 or more. Garmin has created the Edge series of cycle computers with the goal of giving cyclists a better solution.

Garmin Edge 305

The Edge 305 is an entry level cycle computer, with integrated GPS. It easily clips onto your cycle and comes in three packages, including a heart rate monitor, cadence sensor, or both. The cadence sensor requires no calibration for your bicycle, and allows for speed and distance measurements to continue being taken when you train indoors, or if GPS signal is ever lost due to heavy tree cover. The heart rate monitor is intended to enhance endurance training or assist with overall fitness and weight loss. Using it, you can easily ensure that you are staying within your target heart rates while working out.

With the Edge 305, you can plan your workouts in any of three different ways: simple workouts are entered with your choice of a combination of distance, time, and speed, interval workouts include these same items, but have the additional feature of adding periods of easier and more difficult work, along with rest, as you see fit, and advanced workouts allow you to input specific courses from the free Garmin Training Center software. Course data, which can come from your previous workouts, fully exploits the GPS features of the Edge 305 by showing you an easy-to-read visual representation of the path that you will take as you bike. Additionally, as you look at the map, you can see a representation of yourself as you previously traveled the course, allowing you to easily see how you compare to your previous runs. If you would like to push yourself even harder, you can create a virtual partner to travel the course along with you, adjusting the partner's pace faster or slower with the push of a button.

Garmin Edge 305 Summary:

  • Cycle computer with internal GPS, accurately tracks speed, distance, and route taken during a cycling workout
  • Can be used with optional heart rate monitor and/or cadence sensor for extra workout data and to continue tracking speed and distance with GPS signal is lost
  • Input course data from previous workouts to see a visual representation of yourself during future cycling runs with upcoming turns, waypoints, and a virtual partner to compete against
  • Far more affordable than competing cycle computers without internal GPS
